This is all common knowledge. It's standard education in the US. Women had to go work in the factories because the men were all out fighting. I'm sure in the USSR it was the same only on things were desperate enough they had to use women in more active roles. Most unfortunate thing in my opinion was how Soviet government downplayed Leningrad's defenders achievements because it sounded so fantastical it overshadowed the rest of the front.
