The ones who say "American" on census forms are largely English and Ulster-Scots people who've been there for so long they either don't know or don't care about their ethnic origins. The parts of the backcountry like West Virginia are probably some of the oldest as in earliest to arrive of the non-Native Americans.

in the south; they weren't dealing with immigrants from Europe en masse. The North East US got large waves of immigrants from Ireland, Italy, etc; who would form ethnic ghettos within big cities.

Some immigrant groups would try to assimilate more than others. When my great Grandparents came to the US, they didn't ever speak their native language in front of their children. They didn't think being bilingual would be an advantage; they only wanted their kids to speak English and think of themselves as Americans (they hated their native countries they fled from though).

Other immigrant groups saw assimilation as a defeat, as some sort of loss in the face of discrimination by Americans against their ethnic group; and they and wanted their children to think of themselves as hyphenated-Americans; or not as Americans at all.

michigan is beautiful and a really nice state. the problem is that you guys sweep all your shit into hyper fucked areas. black people moved to detroit so white people got the fuck out and created super nice suburb cities. whats left is a hell hole with no taxpayer dollars to sustain it and an aggressive black population.
