Look at the russo-georgian war. It might seem that Russia just outpowered Georgia, but it is not the case. Georgia chose a very special day to attack. It was the opening day of the olympics, Putin was in Beijing. Medvedev was on vacation. Russian army just finished a planned drill and was supposed to rest and repair the vehicles. The only way from Russia to Georgia lead through a narrow Roki tunnel. Should Georgian army block the tunnel - the war would be lost.
Georgian army was trained by US instructors and was using NATO weapons. They had clearly better logistics (Roki tunnel, remember?). They outnumbered the Russians 30 thousands to 12 thousands in the decisive first days of the war. Still, it was a decisive and flash-like victory for Russia. Not due to better weapons or more people, but just because the army was infinitely better trained and infinitely better ready to fight.
