Why is the South East referred to as "The South" while Texas is it's own thing and the states in the south that are on the west side of the country just called "West Coast" instead of "Southwest" and "Northwest"

The Midwest - Same reason the middle east is called the middle east instead of just 'middle', because you have to cross it to reach the west.
