It's what lead this country to its downfall. The nobles started believing they originate from Sarmatians which date back to the Roman Empire, so they thought they're allmighty, didn't want to make themselves or the country better and would rather indulge themselves in worldly pleasures and bully peasants all day for 300 years until Germany, Austria and Russia decided this country is a joke and cleaned up a bit.
Is there a particular way Japanese (particularly in Sendai) hold their mouths when they speak? I want to learn more about phonology, but "Japanese Oral Posture" yields nothing but porn.

How do I interpret なじょ or なんぼ? I think they're interrogatives
Did I forget or what is the お姉さん for little sister/brother? I don't mean いもうと like あね is for big sister when you're talking about yours.
I mean as in お兄さん、お姉さん Is it just いもうとさん and おとうとさん?
Adam Rivera
I went last year, actually. Maybe that's what got me interested. It's definitely been motivating to go through the pictures I took and finding I can read some of the random street signs that just looked like gibberish back then.
Connor Ramirez
You call your younger siblings by their name. If you are talking about them to someone else you would use いもうと or おとうと and if you were addressing someone elses younger siblings you would add さん to them as you would be using them in place of their names

anyone else sign up for JLPT in america? I signed up for N2
Noah Foster
I don't see a reason to sign up for a test. What are you even going to do with an N2 certificate?
Test myself and if I pass then personal feeling of accomplishment. I am then able to tell friends & family I have a certificate and I can put it on my resume, etc.
It's only $60 so I don't see why not take it even just for fun.

Ah so you just like to waste money, cool

This is a long shot but do any of you know what language these are? I think they're Chinese, but title says Tibetan so idk. If you do happen to understand, could you tell me the lyrics? I think they're prayers so they might already exist, but I don't know where to look. Not Buddhist btw, I just like the music and would like to know the lyrics.

I am supposed to start Anki after learning Hiragana right? Does anyone have any first hand experience with Core2K vs isolated kanji?
Evan Rivera
Depends on what you want to learn, japanese or isolated kanji
Jose Thomas
I want to be able to read as quickly as possible.

The vocab I learn that have kanji I studied via RTK are way easier for me. The vocab I study that have no kanji I've rtk'd are much harder and I fail a lot on them, even if I've seen those kanji in other words I know. I did about 1/2 of rtk, while doing core. I stopped doing rtk and after a couple months realized the difficulties I was having.
RTK seemed like a waste of time but for me it really isn't. Dont use it to learn readings/pronunciation. Only use it for keyword->kanji. It's just for having an understanding of the kanji beyond a vague shape that you only sort of recognize.
I would have if there were any realistic job possibilities for me, but since there's no real pressure behind it I will probably go for N1 next year when I can pass without having to learn much for it

If you're planning to read Yotsuba, use the starter pack deck instead of Core 2K then jump straight into mining. Otherwise, do Core2K and isolated kanji both, but think of isolated kanji more of an extra than anything worthwhile. If it ever gets too much, cut isolated kanji out and don't look back. As said, it is a little help but it isn't a dealbreaker.
Matthew Martin
I want to read yotsuba and other manga. Do I need to actively learn grammar or will reading take care of that?
Ayden Turner
Just read a grammar guide over a few days and look up any constructions that you don't understand. Don't make it a huge part of your studies.
Charles King
What's this chick saying? It's informal as hell from what I can understand 『なぜかしら, すごいイジリがいがあるのよねアンタ』 >I wonder why...awesome...
What I imagined when I read your sentence was a scene where a girl is going to roast a boy so that she would derive great joy from it, therefore I translated it into “satisfying”. As literal translation it would be “be worth doing” but the context I mentioned above is the one that you’d come across so often in modern Japanese.
