My grandparents had an italian POW work on the family farm during WW2 and remained friends with him after the war and he came to visit when he was an old man.

what we did here during ww2 is put them up in our national parks and paid them for logging work and misc labour
the weird part is that we didnt fence them in or guard them at all basically other than managing labour, and they would often just walk to the nearest town (which due to nazis taking over ukraine from holodomor era USSR, the very slavic immigrant towns liked them) and grab a few drinks at the pub or whatever
i think a fair few stayed around after the war too, or moved here afterwards

Yeah they were technically POWs in austria before we “rescued” them. We treated them pretty well though.
I live in a town where von Braun, a former SS member, is venerated, talked about as a hero and has streets and buildings named after him.

Australia can lean toward sychophancy where America is concerned but at least in the case of Vietnam they had an obvious (or apparently not to you) interest in keeping aggresive communism out of Southeast Asia during the cold war.
