It can be traced back to Gandhi who was the biggest idealist, do-gooder, and fool of them all. Here was a man who believed if we made a separate state for Muslims, it would lead to peace and reduced tensions. He and not Nehru was also really at fault for socialistic ideas, except that while communist countries advocated forced, rapid industrialization and transforming society, Gandhi's idea of socialism was something totally different altogether. He thought that Indians should live in some kind of ascetic poverty in harmony with the cosmos instead of modernizing.
