I'm trying..i can comprehend french but barely form actual thoughts. What are some good sites or things I can do to expose myself to the language more. Just lerk jeuxvideo instead of Jow Forums?
I feel like there isn't much french media, half the stuff I watch is just english things subbed in french. Maybe I need to find some good french youtubers, only part is I cant understand them if there isn't subs.
What do you enjoy? Look for that. Like really, what other things do you enjoy?

Actually reading/watching anime in french is pretty good and my favorite enjoyable past-time. It's just harder to find good sites in french compared to english some times. Idk if it is their copyright laws, but a lot of shit gets taken down compared to something like kissmanga that has everything always.
Xavier Jenkins
>lerk jeuxvideo Depends on what forum you want to browse, some of them are using so much internet slang and you would'nt understand anything
What are you interested in? Video games? Movies? Science? Some channels have english subtitles. The first that comes to my mind is Joueur du Grenier, the French AVGN. But just a warning, he has a strong southern accent
Luke Watson
Do you like vidya? Watch french streams/LPs Like reading? Read books. Not like top tier literature, but simple genre fiction, maybe stuff you've already read in English once. (The harry potter meme for example)
Hunter Diaz
Italian friends, I've asked this before but I'll ask it again since I didn't get a reply:
What's the difference betwee spoglio and nudo? I know they both mean naked, but in which contexts should they be used?
what are the differences between the souther accent and the others? i heard that quebecois dont make guttural r. how do they pronounce "prendre" and "pendre"?
Kevin James
>some of them are using so much internet slang and you would'nt understand anything Yeah I definitely have a hard time understanding some of the shit they say. I like anime and video games primarily. Think I've actually heard of Joueur du Grenier, I'll check it out. Thanks
Good idea on LPs. I'll look for some that have subs.

naked = nudo Spoglio potrebbe forse significare nudo ma non sentirai mai nessuno dire "sono spoglio" poiché non ha nessun senso. al massimo si può dire spoglio di qualcosa, ma non credo che la persona comune lo utilizzi
Insomma se vuoi dire naked è nudo, spoglio non si usa mai, e quelle poche volte che viene utilizzato credo la traduzione più corretta sarebbe "senza" (without)

Really hard:
A man who had climbed upon a certain fig tree, was bending the boughs toward him and plucking the ripe fruit, which he then put into his mouth to destroy and gnaw with his hard teeth. The chestnut, seeing this, tossed its long branches and with tumultuous rustle exclaimed: "Oh Fig! How much less protected by nature you are than I. See how my sweet offspring are set in close array; first clothed in soft wrappers over which is the hard but softly lined husk. And not content with this much care, nature has also given us these sharp and close-set spines, so that the hand of man cannot hurt us." Then the fig tree began to laugh, and after the laughter it said: "You know well that man is of such ingenuity that he will bereave even you of your children. But in your case he will do it by means of rods and stones; and when they are felled he will trample them with their feet or hit them with stones, so that your offspring will emerge from their armor crushed and maimed; while I am touched carefully by his hands, and never, like you, with roughness.

got to assume there's more language learning resource available in English than any other language, whereas there's relatively few language learning resources in Turkish?
William James
yup. not a single resource for learning swedish in turkish
John Walker
That sounds incredibly odd considering it's Sweden.

I love you in Russian : "yellow blue bus" (ya lyublyu vas)
Will brute force translating while reading a book help you learn the language? In terms of reading?
I know it's time consuming and horrible when you start but it must be the best way to actually read a language, right?
Also has anyone used lingualift?
Wyatt Walker
It'll help but you won't learn grammar much if at all
Dominic Perez
It will more like supplementary, ill be book learning too. I really want to get to the point where I have a general understanding of russian subtitles in movies.
Do you think it'll be a good replacement for say, memrise? ty btw
Justin Robinson
No because memrise drills vocab. The thing with Russian is since even nouns get conjugated you might have issues learning vocab just from hearing the words in real examples
Jaxon Murphy
Declension might be the better word rather than conjugate but still
Michael Carter
I've you're one of those English language purists that supports the whole anglish thing then is there a living language worth learning? Would a Scandi language or German maybe be applicable?

So would a better translation of spoglio just be ‘bare’? This is the only time I think I’ve seen it

Parker Lewis

Asher Wood
Currently learning beaner Spanish since the podcast I'm going through uses it :)
saying that learning a language is entirely dependent on how much effort YOU put in it is such an obvious truism anyone presenting it as a world shattering revelation loses my attention instantly
so i am not even gonna deign that memecat video with a view
in my experience, when brute- translating a chapter of a book just with a dictionary in hand i made loads of mistakes simply because i was missing huge chunks of grammar
so you DO need to take a textbook and learn at least the basics
after that -- go ahead and do read complete Shakespeare
Nicholas Diaz
You're pretty much correct but I'm going to dismiss everything you said with >reddit spacing
Justin Bennett
I agree. The point of the video is that you need to be hands on with it and work through the problems you have with it.

How can I independently learn cantonese? I just know English and Spanish and reality want to learn cantonese to a conversational and literate level . I have no local resources though .
I wanna watch Hong Kong movies . Are their HK/Cantonese based imageboards and forums ?

Good stuff user. Sorry for being this late, I went straight to bed after posting my challange. Protocolletjes uitvoeren, labjournalen bijhouden. Deze drie dagen ben ik bezig met het eiwit fibronectine en de methoden voor het zuiveren/ testen ervan.

>Toch is not neccesary. I take this back. Perhaps it doesn't flow well poetically. It was used correctly.
Grayson White
I couldn't disagree more. I've only used textbooks and classes to learn one of the languages I speak, and it was much slower going than the others. Learning words because a book says you need to know them, or because you want to pass a test, is not a path to fluency. By the time you make it to the end of the million "the noun verbs the noun" fill-in-the-blank exercises, you've spent so much time studying in a useless fashion that you lose the will to just use the language on your own.
"Brute force translation" is certainly a difficult approach in the beginning, but in the long run it's fantastic. Get familiar with the grammar and pronunciation and go try to translate something short, like a paragraph of a news article that interests you. It's tough having to look up so many words you don't know, but you remember them because you actually need those words in order to succeed at what you chose to do, not because someone said "you need to know these 20 words for Friday's test".
Thomas Roberts
Scusa ma che ne so io sei tu l'inglese dovresti dirmelo tu cioè io che ne so se ha più senso dire "bare hill" o "naked hill" (secondo me non ha senso nessuno dei due casi)
> my teacher makes me memorize vocabulary lists and do tons of grammar exercises > classes r stooopid
> I make myself memorize vocabulary lists and do tons of grammar exercises > it's the new fantastic way of learning!!

The video actually agrees with you mate, it was actually quite insightful.
The guy basically says for example when you read a sentence you half understand, Later on down the line in your studies you might learn something to do with that sentence and then your mind puts 2 and 2 together and you finally understand the whole thing.
The guy in the video puts it more eloquently, definitely worth a watch
Jack Sanders
why canto? asian languages are hard bruh, if you just pick it up for anime/movies/comics you will get wiped out. anyway i *cough* acquired the pimsleur course for mandarin, and i know they have one for cantonese, you could check that out
another question i have, why the fuck are so many people learning korean?
Easton Myers
> agree > disagree
I am not arguing against idiotically simple statements like "you have to WORK to achieve result".
It is blindingly OBVIOUS.
OBVIOUSLY you you get as much as you put in. OBVIOUSLY you have to actually TRY. OBVIOUSLY you have to try different things.
Of course, you silly boys. Why does one need a meme on youtubez to realize this.
James Rogers

sorry, for being such a tryhard on a dedicated forum for people who want to learn a language
i guess i should just sit by a riverbank slobbering myself and wait until understanding and full mastery of Korean flows past me.
korean is relatively easy and there are a lot of movies and series in korean, enough to cause interest in learning more
