>The current independence movement emerged after the 2014–15 Hong Kong electoral reform which deeply divided the territory, as it allowed Hongkongers to have universal suffrage conditional upon Beijing having the authority to screen prospective candidates for the Chief Executive of Hong Kong (CE), the highest-ranking official of the territory. It sparked the 79-day massive peaceful occupation protests dubbed as the "Umbrella Revolution". After the protests, many new political groups advocating for independence or self-determination were established as they deemed the "One Country, Two Systems" principle has failed. According to a survey conducted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in July 2016, nearly 40% of Hongkongers aged 15 to 24 supported the territory becoming an independent entity, whereas 17.4% of the overall respondents supported independence, despite only 3.6% stating that they think it is "possible".
You’re underestimating the apathy of most people here. Mainland China gives us good business, and frankly that’s the only thing most people care about. The only people who want independence are wannabe revolutionaries who cling to whatever higher calling they can find to make themselves seem important. A lot of these are westernized who were privileged enough to be sent abroad for education (I was one of these) and adopt liberal naivete and western ideals, none of which work here. You cannot apply western thinking to Chinese problems.

We need to save Hong Kong from becoming a communist nation
Levi Ortiz
Funny how the US spreads shitty liberal propaganda to other countries and rejects it in their country.
Charles Ross
Once shit hits the fan, more people will be for it.
Nicholas Taylor
didnt the british already give them their "independence"?
or is this movement sponsored by the brits to take hong kong back? Im really confused as to wtf is going on there politically.
Jayden Jones
Just a bunch of dumb boomers.
Zachary Clark
this, Fuck those who think we're in the cold war, this is the Chinese century it is also the only hope against (((usa & england))).
Adrian Russell
the brits had a 100 year lease on HK which ended some time in the 90s, so it was given back to China
Carson Jones
Unlike Taiwan, HK doesn't have water protecting it and would require a massive foreign garrison that would effectively render it a colony. Unless you're retarded, liberalism shouldn't preclude you from understanding how power works.
Easton Anderson
>supporting a CivNat movement Don't turn Hong Kong into Brazil, please.
Why do the Europeans have to suffer the burden of carrying 3rd world migrants when it was the US who destabilized the middle east.
Jaxson Cox
They also don't have the massive, overbearing presence of China on their border.
Jose Nguyen
actually, it was jews who run american government and the main benefactor is israel, lets not band those who are under their occupation and power grip into the same basket.
because any gintile that know anything about kike is there is no such thing as "democracy" when living under their ruling iron rod.
Adam King
he means that because HK is so dependent on the mainland now for food, energy, waste disposal, fresh water coupled with the fact that HK has a high living standard means if they choose to go for independence, they stand to lose a lot.
compared to shittier areas with nothing to lose because they have such a shit standard of living to begin with.
John King
Not in countries that are actively seeking to absorb new territories. Most decolonization happens because those territories are no longer profitable, Hong Kong is very profitable. Only chance they have is to get the backing of the UK because China went back on the agreement that they would remain democratic. Alternatively with Taiwan giving up on the one China policy they might have a better chance forming a federation of democratic Chinese states.
