Ehhh its not nearly as bad as it used to be here. Northeast side is still fucking abysmal, the suburbs are generic midwest, and the rest is comparable to a regular city. Maybe some outlier areas, but it isnt that bad. highland park is not detroit. Detroit became humane.

Most of the original US gangs were started that way in the 60s and 70s. Drugs are really what took it to another level and every banger having a gun by default.

Actually I can only speak for Chicago. Notorious gangs like Latin Kings, Gangster Disciples, VIce Lords. It may be the case in other cities too but I don't know how they started, like say Crips and Bloods.

Also I want to recommend everybody in this thread with interest in US gangs, My Bloody Life: The Making of a Latin King. It's written by a past member detailing his experience, really crazy shit and a page turner from beginning to end. He made a book about life after getting out which people didn't like as much, far less entertaining but I thought it was really underrated and gave a good look into why recidivism is so high.

Side note: The author is completely hidden, never exposed his real identity and uses a pseudonym. Always found it funny how I saw ex gang members talking about the gang afterwards all showing their face and stuff. If you're wondering why he hides his identity while detailing his life giving it away anyway, he changes street names and names of people to keep it hidden.

From an infastructure point of view, it's gotten a lot better in the past few years, i.e. the main downtown shown in your pic has been redone to create a more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere. The mayor's also not half bad.

Obviously there's still a lot of crime and poverty (emphasis on poverty here), but it's been getting a little better all things considered. What I'd be more worried about is the state of the auto industry do to le cheeto man and general infrastructure from our republican-controlled state gov., though there's a few major seats open this November so we'll see what happens there.

The suburbs are pretty sporadic in quality, actually. For instance, the Bloomfield area is upper-upper-class, while right next door Pontiac is the very definition of neglect and poverty.

It's reasonably nice if you know where to go, but I wouldn't recommend it as a standalone destination if you're coming from out of country. The university area of downtown, i.e. the Detroit Institute of Art and it's neighboring library are very, as well as some of the old churches, but other than that there's not much to see unless you want to travel into the suburbs to see the lakes. Otherwise, I'd recommend taking the train to Chicago if you'd like to see more of the Great Lakes urban area.

It doesn't have a choice. It needs tax revenue to keep municipal services going. Otherwise the government is literally going to have to start chopping off bits of Detroit and handing them over to the county government.

Nah, they just priced them out. Cholos are dumb, but they actually start businesses and work jobs, which is enough to price half the residents of Oakland out of their homes.
