Huh, the gook is telling me that it acts as a more formal version of the verb conjuctive + conjuctive form of ない (帰ってないで for example) that can serve to say that one action wasn't done in a sequence of events. After a a bit more research, I think it's less of a "not" and more of a "without", that is if the lyrics to military marches are to be trusted : "雪の進軍 氷を踏んで 何處どこが河やら 道さへ知しれず" I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow until the japanons wake up tomorrow to get my answer.

>until tomorrow until the japanons wake up tomorrow And it seems I'd do well with a bit a sleep myself.

Just wondering, are you guys using Anki 2.0 or 2.1?
Some of the add-ons I use are not available on 2.1 so I'm wondering if it's worth switching or not (mainly AwesomeTTS and Kanji Colorizer).
Also, if you happen to know of any Stroke Order add-on for 2.1, please let me know.

0/10 add that it was from a youtube reaction channel and that he was in turn streaming the show from crunchyroll

>Just realized I was learning Japanese using the Han Unification kanji instead of the Japanese kanji How badly did I fuck up? Just switched over to the Japanese kanji and it's all very similar. Seems like this wasn't a huge problem, but definitely something I want to get right going forward.
Joseph King
no, we watched Harmony (downloaded from wherever) and Your Name (Blu-Ray) with german dub... the latter was shown in some theaters here and there so the dub was at least as good as dubs gonna get he would have been cool with watching in original language, but she insisted on "not wanting to read"
Did most of my studying on mobile, which is all fucked up with japanese unless you have a japanese phone. Even the fonts are a pain in the ass to get right. It's all good though, I'm not really having any trouble going through my flash cards, since most of the time for reading we are going off the shape of the kanji (actually its the same with english too, we use the shape of the words and letters more than the content, hence why we don't have trouble reading different fonts)
So third day of book club. How are you guys handling the first chapter?
Angel Gonzalez
What sort of high quality content that didn't get brought over to the west did you find, anons? I recently discovered Kami Sama no Iru Keshiki (pic related) which is literally Aria but better (and I don't say this lightly) and the works of Abe Tomomi, like Chii-chan wa Chotto Tarinai and Getsuyoubi no Tomodachi, that are really just fucking great manga.
It's really hard to find good recommendations on 5ch, though. That was just a fluke.

How does one have enough self control to learn japanese but not enough to deny invitations from "friends" who will purposely delay your nihongo progress.

ず is widely used in both writing/speaking language, and neither more nor less formal/literary than ない and its conjugation. ぬ at the end of a sentence sounds formal, so merely used in speech. As is said, ず is almost always placed in a sequence of events because(?) it can be replaced by ないで or なくて (...I know this explains nothing grammatically). eg. He left the room without saying anything. 彼は何も言わず部屋を出て行った。 (言わず can be replaced by 言わないで or 言わずに) Temperature doesn't drop, I can't stand any more. 気温が下がらず、私はこれ以上がまんできない。 (下がらず can be replaced by 下がらなくて)
[addition for those interested] I guess the fact that ず is ない's old jisho-form and te/masu-form(終止形 and 連用形) makes it more confusing. This usage is still accepted nowadays like: 「伊方原発、運転差し止め認めず 大分地裁」 (=大分地方裁判所は、伊方原子力発電所の運転の差し止めを認めない) 産経ニュース-2018/09/27 or many set phrases 怖いもの知らず / 役立たず / 見ず知らずの人 / 後悔先に立たず / 開かずの扉 / (

ぬ at the end of a sentence sounds *very formal, so *rarely used in speech.

fuck the new anki, I don’t remember why, but I tried it out and it was trash, I think it was the UI and default fonts or something also no need to fix something that isn’t broken

watching two movies isn't exactly the epitome of making nihongo progress anyway.... my other friends don't have any interest in anime, so I'm mostly glad I have friends who I can talk with about more than just Dragonball or some other stupid shit
anyone has some advanced grammar book that they'd like to recommend?
i can communicate fine, but i feel it's time to get hang of the more nuanced stuff
if you know one that could help a lot it'd be great, thanks

After I fell behind by a week or so I autistically tried to read through the archived threads I missed. This general is better than a lot of generals but still full of shit so I gave up. What books and rules were decided on? Is there an old post you can link?

Thanks Australia. If that link was used every thread, I think that would be good enough.

Is the audio of yomchan down? I want to try yomichan, so I can ditch rikaisama and update firefox; but the audio does not work. JapanesePod is dead Japanesepod (alternative), there is the mechanical noise, but no sound (I tried some really common words) Jisho.org it seems, as someting is loading, but nothing happens (no sound)
How many of the dictionaries do you have installed? I'd get all of them. Sometimes there are holes between definitions that get resolved by other dictionaries.
Jose Martinez
Ok, thank you Just the JMdict english I will install more and try it again
No clue. Wish it would default to computerized speech instead of clicking.
Chase Butler
I installed all 5 dictionaries and I still have no sound. The only difference is, that it clicks, when I use Jisho as source (not for all words but for most second recommendations)
I don't know. I only have clicking sounds (and no sound for Japanespod) and I don't even know if thereis audio for a word though sometimes there is a loading thingy....

It works with Chrome. Maybe my firefox version is to old (55). I will try it again with a newer version of firefox tomorrow, maybe it works and if not I can still use the old version with rikaisama. But thank you for the idea with Chrome
