the worst thing that happened in this country was that after communism collapsed the dwellers were given their apartments almost for free as their private property, so now it's impossible to tear the blocks down because the city or the real estate developer would need to buy 100 apartments from 100 separate owners, most of whom are old grannies who won't sell their apartment for any money because they are too old to move out.
It is a real problem especially in Warsaw which has commieblocks in the very centre and the plots of land under the blocks are worth millions yet you can't do anything so the run down block stands there and will stand until it falls apart. This shit sucks.

It wasn't capitalism, it was actually communism, because people got the flats they were only tenants in (they actually "rented" their apartments from the state/cooperatives in the communist era) for free as their private property.

Yeah it is booming but the city has limited space to grow in the centre as most of it is occupied by ugly, run-down commieblocks that take a lot of space (because commie urban planning entailed not only building a commieblock but also green areas around it and it takes so much space in the centre of the city).
For instance, the block in pic related is located in one of the most expensive place in Warsaw and the plot of land under the block is worth probably like 10 times more than worth of all flats in the block combined yet the block can't be demolished because boomers inside don't want to sell their flats "just because" and they don't really care about money, they just want to spend their last days in the place they have lived for the last 50 years, so this ugly block will be there until it collapses.

Anyway alot of people moved to western Germany so plenty of commieblocks ended up vacant so they just tore them down.

There are commieblocks in spain and when my family inmigrated back here they lived in one. My grandmother still lives there and although I haven't I've spent enough time there to associate it with childhood and nostalgy. That IS WHY for americans, (I had talked once with some dude from west virginia) who have no direct comparison to the slav/south european comfy granny commieblock childhood and decadence it seems so comfy.
It is desu but at the same time it makes me pretty uneasy. It's so very decadent.
