desalination isnt actually that expensive. the cost of desalination is fairly low compared to how much energy you need to pump water to a sufficient hight for distribution. and egypt is in the fucking desert. solar power gets cheaper and cheaper. and solar power is fairly well suited for such industrial applications, the uneven power output sucks to supply a main energy grid that needs constant power but industries that require large amount of energy can adapt to it.

energy consumption from desalination is as low as 3 kWh/m3 similar to the energy consumption of other fresh water supplies transported over large distances. saudis arent the only ones who get a large portion of their water that way. israel does too. the cost of solar energy has been rapidly declining the biggest problem is storage wich is much less of a problem in the industrial scenario I described. the nile is also a major water way for shipping wich is pretty good for building an industry.
