Not really. It’s simply a recognition of the fact that Americans would not be willing to die to defend Taiwan were it invaded by China. If we gave a false promise to defend the island, and then didn’t, and China indeed decided to occupy it, that would be far worse for our reputation than if we honestly just say, “We support Taiwan’s sovereignty and would be very upset if China decided to annex it, but we aren’t gonna start WWIII over such an action.”

I have a good friend Taiwan. It is such an interesting state of affairs. Truly. A lot of Taiwanese people know Japanese too, and some of the criminal organizations there have links to yakuza. I’m sure within the next 50 years the situation will manage itself out.
