Do they file a request for information from your bank? Does it require paperwork? A subpoena? What indicates to them that they should do this in the first place?
My understanding is that two things exist which might indicate to the IRS that you are a possible target for investigation: CTRs and SARs. A CTR is a form that is filed when you transact any amount over $10,000. An SAR is essentially any amount deemed suspicious by the body responsible for handling your money, usually your bank. So, if you're a NEET and you suddenly start depositing $9,000 a day for three months straight, you will likely have a large number of SARs filed by your bank. Moreover, you will be guilty of something called 'structuring,' because you're most likely intentionally trying to stay under the $10k threshold.
