I've come to the sudden realization that just about no one in the Japan thread on /trv/ speaks any Japanese whatsoever, and therefore has only entry level knowledge about the country itself. Can anyone here recommend experiences restricted to those who can understand the language? e.g. watch a comedy routine, participate in group activities, chatting up locals, etc. I'm going to Nagano, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo.

Sure, I'm learning japanese and I wonder if when I can write it to a certain level I could enter some light novel contest.
i mean, if it's a real contest i'd imagine there'd be certain restrictions of participation from other countries. every contest has those kinds of restrictions though.
Can someone tell me the best way to learn Japanese? Like the best language program? I don't know of many except Rosetta Stone, and I've heard it's very pricey and not very good. I want a good program. I don't mind spending some money on it, but I'd like to be a solid program that can actually teach me the language. I know that it might not make me fluent in it, but I'd like to reach basic level at least. Like enough to where I could write and speak sentences or like talk in Japanese I guess.
And I know that it might be better to take a class that teaches Japanese, but unfortunately we don't really have those in my city.

I can't make sense other than some few verses.
I suggest Wanikani. They teach you kanji and vocabulary and its incredibly easy to make goals. It worked best for me, The way they make you remember kanji is great. Other methods seems like it just drills it in your head until you remember it, this way it feels like theres actual method to learn it.
60 levels in total and like I mentioned before, making goals is easy. For example if you were to complete level one that means you can translate 7.5% of text on NHK, get to level 2 and now you can translate 17.44% of text. Its autistic to say but it actually feels like you "level up".
Also the overall "flow" of WK feels really smooth. Do some reviews then go run some errands, come back and bam more reviews to do.
anyways I sound like a shill but coming from someone whos tried classes,books and other web programs I actually really like WK.
