You only need Eth for gas when mining. Mining itself is done with GPUs.

Yeah. But I'm not sure how that works or how the eth is connected to me mining the tokens. If I have zero eth there, what happens? I don't receive the mined tokens?

i beleive that is right. it would just error i think and not process. when you think of gas, think of it as what is getting paid to people and to pay others it has to leave from you. so yeah i dont think the block would create.
