The entire point of Reconstruction was to make it so the South could never feasibly revolt again.

Sure, they rebuilt some of our stuff, but our people were exploited, and only the yankees benefited economically.
The term carpet baggers is what they're referred to in the south nowadays (people who came from the north during reconstruction to make money)

As for the federal money bit, feds give money to everyone, so this isn't a surprise. But it wasn't much more than they gave to everyone else.

There's also a lot of other factors, of course, far to many for me to properly explain, even if I knew all the minute details, which I don't.
But I do know that even in Virginia we haven't fully recovered from the war, every southern state is like this, aside from Texas maybe.
