there were hundreds of US planes for every vietnamese plane in the air. It's called a target rich environment. Americans often had to compete for kills because there were so few enemy planes up. In air to air combat throughout the war the US shot down more planes than they lost. The vast majority US aircraft were downed from ground fire.
Not to imply that the vietnamese didn't have some very skilled pilots though. They definitely knew what they were doing.

The failure of the Vietnamese airforce also lay in the fact that the standard Soviet AA turned out to be fucking garbage, they had gotten access to an American AIM 9 Sidewinder which they tried to reverse engineer and the program led to the development of the K13 Vympel but it was a pathetic attempt as it was later found out that the missile simply didnt work
