Nah. Maybe globallh most known but in Finland the most iconic characters are probably the two ones i mentioned. As in we have to read the books they are in at school.
Also moomins were written by swedish lesbian anarchist. I spit on her grave
rude, moonims are based, stop neglecting your culture
probably either Siegfried or Faust
It's Superman
The books are nice source material but everything that made moomins moomin was the japanese anime adaptation, you can't argue with that.
does folklore count? i don't think australia has much classic literature that contain an iconic figure.
the man from snowy river perhaps
King Arthur maybe? Robin Hood, Sherlock Holmes, James Bond and a couple of characters from LotR are strong candidates as well.
Pedro Páramo, I guess
Robin Hood, sherlock holmes, james bond, hamlet, romeo & juliet.... you got so many mate
we've been studying british and spanish theater in class and they pretty much started "breaking" the rules of greek theater at the same time and really evolving theater, its pretty cool
The novel starts with him, but it is really about his father, Pedro Páramo, no? It's been a long while since I last read it for school and I barely remember it sadly. I will pick it up soon, now that I think about it.
desu its hard for non-europeans to have relevant western literature, they had less time to do it after all
the only one that comes to mind is USA literature like tom sawyer

Fun fact: While Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn are the quintessential literary American boys Mark Twain had trouble finding an American publisher and used a Canadian company. While Anne Shirley is the quintessential literary Canadian girl Lucy Montgomery had trouble finding a Canadian publisher and used an American company.
Probably Walter Faber, but I'm not sure.
It's Heidi or the Swiss Family Robinson
I don't know, Pedro Páramo is very influential for Latin American writers. Everyone from Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Borges have said they were influenced by it. Mexican literature in particular goes back to the times of the colony with people like Sor Juana.

There's even pre-Columbian literature if we want to WE WUZ, given that Mesoamerica was one of the only 5 places in the world that developed writing independently.

And there are multiple examples that followed after independence.

And Latin America as a whole has created its own literacy genres with things like "magical realism" and the Latin American boom

Now, of course I understand why those writers aren't more known worldwide considering what you said, but it is often because Latin America gets ignored and not for the lack of quality writers imho
I'm currently reading Don Quijote and it's one of the most entertaining books I've ever had the fortune to read. the dialogues between him and Sancho are so fucking good.
would you say its a comedy or a tragedy?
el lazarillo de tormes has a similar dark medieval sense of humor
Its great reading it in the original old spanish text,it feels so knightly
I'm only at the part where Don Quijote beat the student from Salamance so it would be too early to make a statement, but based on what happened so far, I'd say it's a tragicomedy
