Mexico is a pretty cool place from an analytical view. Every century or so they have some wild state of "everything sucks" before some sort of revolution. Then they rapidly improve everything in a brief period to become relatively well off before letting it decline for a few generations until things repeat. Lázaro Cárdenas was the president of Mexico when that went down last time in the 30's and 40's.

Russians are basically "what if the educated white American middle class was broke, drunk, and hopeless as fuck all the time". I'm not saying this viewpoint isn't distorted. It's no less distorted than how the orient was conceived during the 19th century. Most Americans know Russia through Putin's drama on television, Hollywood movies, and Jackass-type stunts Russians pull off on YouTube. Most of them have never so much as talked to a Russian before.
