Honestly when I look back on my childhood I don't recall ever having a single real conversation with my mother desu. She didn't know how to connect with me then, and definitely doesn't now.
There has never been a moment in my life when I felt like I could truly trust my mother or go to her for my problems. It's sad I guess... but nobody has a perfect life.

What you say is obviously true, but there are children at a certain age who have no tolerance for constructive discipline. That method of parenting only goes so far, children are not rational, hell even most adults don't take constructive criticism well. What happens when the child blows you off, or ignores you? What if they comply but just do the bare minimum of what you ask of them, to get you off their back?
It's important for children to understand that certain actions will have tangible consequences, even if they don't understand why (or don't believe) what they did is wrong
I think time outs or something similar would suffice in this situation but I don't think the punishment the OP black kids mother took was necesarilly wrong. She aimed to embarrass him, yeah. It worked. He's not gonna do whatever the fuck he did again, or at least won't do it as shamelessly next time
