It's not a meme. While there are plenty of normal Americans in CA, it has a huge proportion of hispanics and ultra liberals who have nothihg but disdain for nornal rural/suburban americans. Also it has yuge crime, one of the lowest average IQs, ridiculous property prices because nobody wants to live in the ghettos, and the worst traffic and air pollution of anywhere in the US.

Smug superior attitude for the most part, they're as bad as Texas in that regard.
But recently it's due to the massive number of emigration from the state, particularly to the PNW and Colorado where they run into quite a bit of cultural friction with the locals. But they also drive up the housing market in some kind of white on white gentrification that displaces locals who can no longer afford rent.
