Taoism is basically a quasi-pantheist non-contradictory version of dualism: at the highest level the universe consists of opposite forces that cannot exist without their counterpart (in the west we generally think that there is one good side of the natural order and one bad that has to be eradicated). Those opposite but non-contradictory forces constantly reshape the face of the universe and also dictate the best way of life for humans who have to find a proper balance between those forces in their daily life. This is the gist of the philosophical Taoism that unfortunately gradually evolved into its more popular version ful of various quasi magical rituals or techniques supposedly elongating life, healing deseses or guaranting prosperity.

it just got syncretized with chinese shamanism and buddhism as it drifted from a philosophy to being an "organized" religion with differing schools
