Aesthetic as fuck but kinda rough and the bolt coming back over the grip is annoying.
That said every Browning design should be an object of worship regardless of its inherent flaws.
A lot of people still like these because, as it has an exposed hammer, you can set it to a half-cock position on a live round and thus safely keep a round chambered while not compressing the spring if you leave it in that state for a long time. I have no idea how big a deal spring compression actually is and it's really not all that hard to just keep the chamber empty and pump a round in when you need it if that's something you're worried about, but I guess there's a certain appeal in just thumbing the hammer back and being ready to go. I'm baffled that nobody has taken advantage of this by coming out with a modern exposed hammer shotgun with a DA/SA style decocker for those of us with modern sensibilities who dislike pulling the trigger on a live round in order to put it in that safe position. Having a bolt that won't cut your hand wouldn't hurt either.
literally obsolete in every way.
Overly complex, too many small parts, incredibly complex disassembly, prone to failure, easy to get dirt in the action.
Pretty much any modern shotgun is a better choice. If you just want slam fire get the Ithaca 37.
The only reason I have one is because of it's historical significance.
Are you me?
i wish it was still made with the heat shield and all
The only people who don't consider JMB as our god are noguns, contrarians and faggots.
Nice repetition there
Or people who dont want a mechanical disconnector so they can just hold the trigger and rack the 1897 and fire the entire magazine
I like the exposed hammer, but the bolt coming back can be potentially dangerous.
Ithaca 37 and don't have to worry about skinning your hand
I have one from 1898 that still runs like a champ. Only thing I dislike is the slide release; JMB should have made it to where it would pump regardless of hammer position, similar to the lever guns he had designed before.
This
Historical significance and slam fire fun are the only reasons I have mine.
It was my first shotgun and I quickly realized I should get a more modern design for hard use.
Asthetic as fuck especially blasting all-brass shells out of.
Supposedly they work well with Augila minishells, haven't tried them myself yet.
Ok Paul Harrell.
A spring in a compressed state doesn't wear anymore than a spring in an uncompressed state. Springs wear during the compress/uncompress cycle. It is the transition that causes wear.
I didn't say that was a big concern for me, but some people hold to that regardless of how true it is (I'm not qualified to speak on the subject.) Personally I'd rather just keep the chamber empty and rack in a round on picking it up in a home defense situation. Like I said, I'm not big on dropping a hammer on a loaded chamber to get it to that half-cock position in the first place. I'm not likely to fuck it up, sure, but on a homestead in 1899 firing a shot off into the air would mean feeling a little embarrassed whereas doing it where I live would mean going to jail.
The half cock isn't for spring fatigue god dammit, it makes the gun drop safe and locks the pump. fuck
It's a slim handy gun with good capacity and length in the trench gun configuration. It's a legitimately good weapon and the ability to leave the hammer at half cock is a unique advantage.
>Even the chink clones are fun
I actually have one. It's super cool but if you have large hands the bolt can hit you in the hand should you be careless with your grip.
It is a complex gun that has some cool features.
>Slam fire
You can hold the trigger down and it will fire as you pump the action, neat.
>tear down
A proper 1897 like the one pictures in my collection here, breaks down cleanly in half.
>Fast unload
A feature many don't know about is that the feed arms are hinged and the buttons on the side of the receiver allow you to "open" them at the mag tube. This means by squeezing the receiver, you can quickly eject all rounds out of the mag tube without having to rack them through the action. It's a super cool feature.
>has a hammer
You can cock it or whatever. Some people lover hammers.
So the 1897 is a cool gun. You do have to be careful of chambering though. It's one of the first guns to take the modern smokeless 2 3/4" shells. That was a change somewhere around 1940 or so. Prior to sometime around then they were chambered 2 1/2" cartridges. Ones like pictured in the OP also don't break down in half like mine. Laslty, the barrels have integrated chokes so how you buy it is what you get. Mine has a full choke.
In terms of overall design, the model 1912, a.k.a. model 12, is a stronger more modern design.
In terms of modern shotguns, the 1300 is extremely under appreciates and an excellent gun.
The newest SXP guns made in Turkey now, are not nearly as nice but they work.
da slamfire iz fun
what clone is that?
I wasn't saying the half cock was for spring fatigue cocksuck. I was saying that people who believe leaving a shotgun with an internal hammer loaded isn't going to damage the hammer spring in any way.
that is some NICE ASS SAINT AUGESTINE grass son
Looks like a dull mower blade.
IAC
I was pointing out that it's for making the gun drop safe, and has nothing to do with springs
ITT it needs a lanyard loop.
yea those tips are a little shredded but it has some very healthy stolons. I cant even see the soil. Wish my lawn was that green, then I'd have all the gun toting puppers flocking to it.
I love mine and I'm a tacticool fag
Damn, I didn't realize there were so many Hank Hills here. I just do the bare minimum required with a cheapo lawnmower to keep the HOA off my ass. I guess I'm lucky that it rains frequently.
Why would anyone want to do drugs when you can mow your lawn lol. But for real I am a gun enthusiast first, and a Turf grass enthusiast second. Keep up the good lawn.
Yep. the lack of disconnector, which means it can be slam-fired as fast as one can operate the handle. Pretty handy for trench warfare, not so much in other places.
Have a Chinese copy. Yes, its pretty much a meme gun now. While better than its contemporaries, its not as good as all the successors.
>Damn, I didn't realize there were so many Hank Hills here.
Only 2 kinds of people like guns.
Hank Hills and Dale Gribbles.
>then I'd have all the gun toting puppers flocking to it.
I want to play fetch on your lawn
Pretty good waifu desu
They're awesome. Get/make a trench variant and put a 1905 on it for kicks. Even if it's a repro and you're a poorfag it'll still look cool.
Legend holds that if your lawn is especially beautiful, a noble dog with a classic firearm will arrive to become your companion, a gift to you from John Moses Browning himself.
>tear down
>fast unload
neither are features on all 1897s.
My 1899 production m97 doesn't have the two buttons on the sides to unload it, my 1927 does.
They also weren't all takedown models.
something to be careful of with older shotguns is chamber length. Back when these were first designed over 100 years ago, 2 3/4" shells were roll crimped paper shells that when fired, weren't as long as modern star crimped 2 3/4" shells.
Because of that, about 1/8" of the hull will actually extend into the forcing cone, and won't fully expand, which causes a pressure spike.
This means you should either:
only shoot light target loads
use chamber/forcing cone reamer to ream out the forcing cone
Use 2 1/2" shells
I think he was talking about 2nd ammendment geared pet play fetishists. Could be wrong though.
Like all shotguns, it’s very very fun
>getting bored with shooting rifles and handguns but still have tons of fun with shotguns, especially my Auto-5
>friends are never available
>Auto-5
hey its me ur friend
no i meant an actual doggo ya weirdo
Well that's lame, people doggo battle buddies are way better.
the gun, not the gun wielding waifu.
Now, as you probably know, Americans took shotguns into World War Ones, 'cause we're goddamn Americans. We knew what shotguns could do in the trenches and goddamn they did it well. Did you know however, that the Germans actually had the temerity, in the September of 1917 to lodge a formal protest (I do believe I just got overcome with the awesomeness of the shotgun and wrote 1917 instead of 1918) saying that the Winchester '97 is a violation of the Hague conventions and the civilized rules of war. Well, civilized? Maybe. Rules of war? I don't think so. The US government took a look at this and said "You know what, aren't you the bastards that came up with the idea of flamethrowers? Didn't you fuckers invent poison gas and start using it too? You know what, we're not going to stop using shotguns and if you execute any Americans for having shotguns we're going to execute all of our German prisoners too. So how do you fucking like that?" Guess what? Six weeks later the war was over. That's how they liked it.
So basically burgers with scatterguns ended WWI? Wtf I love historical revisionism.
The german bitching was real though, as was them threatening to execute any american soldiers they captured that they found shotgun shells on. American generals retaliated by saying they would execute any german soldiers they captured that were found to be in possession of saw tooth bayonets. The whole violation of Hague convention and inhumane shit was based on them believing that shotguns were only for hunting, therefore it was inhumane to use them on humans, which they were not made to be used on. Flammenwerfers and mustard gas on the other hand... Basically, germans are massive hypocrites that want to have their cake and eat it too.
Do they still sell 1897 trench clones? Cant seem to find any of them
They look cool and are fun, but they are not worth the 2k asking price in my opinion

I'm sure you could find the trench gun hardware for not too much, and install it yourself, or have a gunsmith do it should you be afflicted with a terminal case of butter fingers.
first gun i bought and i love it
>I'm sure you could find the trench gun hardware for not too much, and install it yourself
good luck with that.
I really like them, they're one of my favourite looking designs and they feel really good. Exposed hammer is neato and they're very nice and slim shotguns.
However the biggest gripe for me is their inertia lock, I really don't like inertia locks. In the case of my Chinese clone it straight up locks up when shooting low brass target loads because the inertia lock system was done about as well as Chinks copy anything. Most actual ones I've heard don't have this issue but I'm not a huge fan of inertia locks in anything, these day's they're a liability/annoyance not a feature.
