Modern bullshit is due to politicians' influence over military operations. Top brass won't step outside the lines for fear of getting axed. Competent people are leaving in droves because they're fed up with bureaucratic fuckery (bad equipment, spending trivial things while cutting back on essentials) and can get better jobs elsewhere.
