I'd say they're fine, but I can't back that up with any info. If you look up the stuff from a few years ago when the AB2s were still readily available you'll see they were very well received. I'd hazard a guess that the same company built the B1s, but they didn't seem as popular at the time.
So as long as everything is straight on it, and the price is good for you, go for it.

Dissipator, the last AR I had was a 605 clone I built--it was cool up until I shot it, but it just didn't do anything for me after that. Sold it to a vet that had a 605 when he was in and used the money to buy more ak kits. The only AR i'd be interested in now is a 601 and/or a m16a2, but they'd probably wouldn't get used often.

It's settled 7.62 it is. That's what everyone recommends, plus I went to Academy tonight, and they had a SHIT TON of 7.62, and not a single box of 5.45. Sexy raifu btw. ;)

5.45 is significantly less recoil and more on par with your run-of-the-mill AR-15, but 7.62x39 is always cheaper.

I don't want to sound like a shill but I got my A1 kit from whatacountry. From what little information I could dig up, my kit's dated somewhere between '67 and '70. A lower receiver, barrel and mags and you're good to go.

I'm also biased towards a dissipator, so thinking I'll go with one. While a 10.5" just sounds deliciously short and lightweight, I won't need anything too fancy. At the same time I'd like it to be a good bit updated in terms of trigger/bcg. Thanks for the input.

I know this is /akg/ but I've been thinking about making a classic one too. I wouldn't go Vietnam, though. I'd like to do an A1 rifle with A2 furniture, like my Dad's rifle was when he was NG. It's just too bad he can't remember the buttstock number.

He's never really played up his time, but I always thought it was cool as fuck. He was on the brink of deployment into the gulf war and his unit had just finished chemical weapons training the day before it ended.

You're probably too young to remember the steel core 7.62x39 ban and how the owner of Olympic Arms (an AR manufacturer) basically said "Oh well" when they released the OA-93 even though they were repeatedly warned it would cause a ban on, the then plentiful, chinese steel core ammo.

The more you read into the 7n6 ban, the more pissed off you'll get. That Onyx was allegedly submitted in 2011, and it took until 2014 to ban 7n6 "because" of it? Come on. I know the ATF is slow, but they were quick as fuck on the Chinese steel core ban. Hell they were talking about it when Oly-Arms was just advertising the OA-93 in Shotgun News, before it was even available.
We go through this every hundred threads or so, but I still try to inform those who ask about it, because it is horseshit and ARfags don't care because their steel core ammo has an exception clause carved out.

You could buy a draco or vz58. I have both. They aren't a great substitute but its better than nothing.

And so far the kit I got is holding up, but any failure's going to be on my part. The upper receiver I got was pretty fucking beat up, but a thorough washing and it looks good again.

That is pretty much the version I heard, other than that someone submitted a request to the ATF to approve an "AK pistol" in 5.45mm, which they refused to approve, and then banned the ammo as "handgun ammo" anyway.

Which is bullshit, because the law specifies that "AP ammo" has to be larger than .22 caliber, and 5.45x39mm bullets are .220-.221" in diameter, with a .214" bore diameter, so they're actually ".21 caliber" by the common meaning of the term, which is based on bore diameter. ".22 caliber" bullets start at .224" in diameter and go up to .227" for the old .22 Savage Hi-Power centerfire round from the 1920s. This is your daily reminder, by the way, that if there was ever a time that the ATF just enforced the law instead of making shit up as they went along, it is long past. I could go on about this, and the difference between power ("kneel or we will kill you, peasant") and authority ("we act to enforce the social contract, and we legitimately follow the publicly available written rules your elected representatives set for us, so we are requesting your cooperation"), but that would be Jow Forums, not Jow Forums.

If someone were to do the same thing with an "AK pistol" in 7.62x54R, all the cheap milsurp nugget food disappears the same way, because 90% or more of it is steel-core.

Wrap it in paracord. If the added height of a layer of paracord is not sufficient, put some kind of spacer--maybe a length of plastic tubing of an appropriate diameter--atop the stock before wrapping. You can also always add additional layers of paracord.
