Not gonna lie I do wish this came in a metal enclosure like all other jds products. Its good quality plastic but the metal plus option for engraving would have been nice, I would have happily forked over an extra $40-$50 for it. Still well built though.

The two front feet of the unit are slightly elevated so the front of the unit is actually a teeny bit higher than the back. Feet were already stuck on to the unit.

Right now I'm listening to my LCD-3 which I have complained about here not really liking in the past but I have always suspected that my fostex amp was just not providing enough power for them which is why I still haven't sold them despite not really liking them. They got loud on the fostex amp but planars can be a bit tricky like that in that they will get plenty loud but sound like shit without enough power. So far I think I was correct because I'm not disliking the LCD-3 at all on the atom. I also have TH900 and HD660s although those are both easy to drive headphones that sound perfectly fine on the fostex amp and shouldn't sound any different from having extra power.

And yeah, they're yamaha hs5 speakers

I snatched a DT 990 Edition 250 Ohm for 100 Eurobucks and a DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm for 90 at Amazon.

I'm only going to keep one of them, and initially I thought that it's going to be the 990 for sure, and I just ordered the 770 to have an idea what it sounds like.

But now that I've done some listening I'm not so sure anymore. I actually prefer the sound of the 770 in many ways. The only thing I don't like is that it's closed, and that it has a higher clamping force than the 990 edition.

I feel like a part of me is just trying to talk myself into keeping the 990s because getting them for 100 is a great price, and I love getting a good price, plus they are just really comfy.

But while the 990 feel more comfy on my head, the 770 just sound way more relaxed and don't have the harshness and sibilance of the 990s.

I can't make up my mind /hpg/, why is getting new headphones so hard?

Spend the time you have till returning with them, longer periods. Day with 990, day with 770, so on. Try EQing the treble on 990 a bit off, so you get the comfiness and the more laid-back sound of 770. I'm assuming you have at least a week to fuck around with them before making a decision, plenty of time to pick a favorite.

How powerful does your headphone amp need to be for optimal performance and to have sufficient volume overhead? I'm interested in the Topping DX3 Pro but my only reservation is that it's a downgrade in amp power from my current unit (NFB 15.32)
fwiw I'll be driving a HD 58X with it, but I like having the flexibility to run more demanding headphones, you never know what you're going to own in the future.

Well, apparently I have until Jan 31st since they have some kind of Christmas return policy, but I don't plan on waiting that long. Still, I'll spend the next week or so listening to them for long periods, and hope I get used to the 990s because frankly I want to keep them they just sound a bit too 'sharp' for my taste in certain songs.

The reason I'm looking to upgrade from my audio gd is that I find the sound is a bit warm, and I want something more neutral and a little more detailed. I'm unsure how much of it is the dac section and how much of it is the amp section, but the dac chips the 15.32 uses are supposed to have a reputation for being a little warm.
So I'm really after a new combo unit or a stack that isn't dissimilar in price ($300US), that way I can flog the gd on the headfi forums and the upgrade won't cost me too much.

And to add to this these amps that advertise stupid power like 4 or 5 watts per channel (Schiit jotunheim advertises 7 fucking watts) are memes, no headphone out there will recieve any benefit from that much power.

Dx3 puts out 1W (I believe) which should be plenty.

what's the difference between dt880 250ohm vs 600ohm?

I'm looking for some BT headphones that don't fuck up multiple sources. I want to able to answer phone calls while I'm already connected to a another source and intelligently switch between them.

I know that Bose QC35II does this but there are many reviews that say that they fuck up all the time. I do have good BT cards in my computer and my phone.

Holy shit. I'm glad I dodged a bullet and bought the LSR305's over the H5. When I went to listen to them in the store the H5's sounded coloured, more like hifi speakers and this proves it. At least the H8's are pretty balanced but fuck I didn't realise the H5's were that shit.
