The state of 4K content

>most films and TV shows are not bothering to release in 4K
>most sports content is barely 1080p if not 720p
>much of the 4K content that actually exist have shit bitrate
>satellite 4K channels are effectively non-existent
>4K gaming is a joke even on high end graphics cards - most heavy gamers prefer 1440p at 144Hz
>most programs are optimized for 1080p and need to be scaled
>world internet infrastructure is at large not ready to handle mass adoption of 4K users
>4K TVs are still selling like hotcakes
Did you fall for this meme? Other than """"productivity"""" autism on your PC, what actual use do you have for it?

1080p is fine

4K is absolutely fucking retarded.
This. 4K is also a distraction so normies don't get together and force actual 1080*p* broadcasting.

Though I should add that the scene isn't blameless either - y'all anime encoders are fucking retarded for using shit like 10-bit and H.265, let alone 4K. Stop "innovating" and focus on the basics.

higher contrast and refresh rate is more important to nail down first

>Other than """"productivity"""" autism on your PC
>wanting to see more code while programming with non-eyestabbing font sizes is autism now
ANGERY

I bought mine just for Blue Planet II in 4k.

I use 360p most of the time no reason not too considering my isp is shit

ive actually been in the market for a good IPS 4k panel, 30+inches.
reason? for porn. that's it.
problem is i can't justify the $400 price tag for a porn panel lol

>wanting to see more code
warrants larger screen, not one that downscales fornt to the point where you have to enable fucking magnifier you dishonest donut

>you dishonest donut
You owe me a pair of sides, user.

>10-bit
Provides a better compression efficiency.
>H.265
Great for low to moderate bitrates compared to H.264.

>4K
>on a small screen

>""""productivity"""" autism
You mean a paying job? Yes I like having ultra-sharp lines in CAD.

if you spend 1k on a tv you might aswell have it be a 4k display

>Stop "innovating" and focus on the basics.

>>most sports content is barely 1080p if not 720p

Aren't all the high profile sports like soccer, Formula 1 and American ball broadcast in 4K?
Though I'm watching Formula 1 on my 720p TV right now though with plans to upgrade.

>warrants larger screen
brb throwing your monitor in a skip and replacing it with a 40" 480p screen. size is all that matters so this should look great.
chew a poo

And what are the basics for video compression? What are devs supposed to focus on if not compression efficiency?

what are the basics?

Filters for standard H.264 that have had years of development, instead of newfangled crap to save a few MiBs and look like dogshit in comparison.

>Formula 1

Is that still 4k in 24hz though? Because that looks slow as fuck.

>look like dogshit in comparison
Have you actually tried comparing 8-bit vs. 10-bit H264 or H265 vs. H264 at low bitrates? Or are you just spouting what you heard on Jow Forums?

Nice spelling, pranjeet

nice hyperbole faggot

There's no reason not to go higher-res. At some point we won't even need anti-aliasing. As for the ancient software that can't utilize that resolution, well, sucks for you if you use it.

>racing footage
>24p
are they taking the piss?

I fell for the 4k meme. Got the 4k tv, 4k joey, and hopper 3 (4k capable) from dish thinking it would be the perfect trifecta of awesomeness. It didnt change shit, only 20 movies are in 4k through on demand, no channels are in 4k, football looks worse than my loving room cheapo 55" 1080p. The only time it shines is when I cast 4k videos from YouTube on it. Thank God I picked it up last year in black Friday for like 275$ but I will never recommend anyone buying one.

>Not watching Netflix "4k" with DVD bitrate
Bad goy

>expecting a bargain bin $275 TV to not look like shit

Hdr and (3d glasses) vr went the same way it's just a meme.
The jumps from sub 480 to 720/1080 was amazing but 13+ years on 4k literally doesn't look any different at standard viewing distances
4k gaming especially is absolutely laughable modern aa basically negates the need for any resolution above 2k-3k max
Movies and tv I never bothered with above 1080p and regularly watch 720p fine barely notice a difference
Most normal fags see the bit rate/color space increases in (4k) hdr and think the improvements in picture quality are because of resolution when it's really the codecs/decoder used.

Ai up scaling and denoising in real time is here now and makes raw high res not needed anyway

It took me a pretty while to adopt hd , the tech was mature by then. The same will be for 4k for me.

Original streaming content is almost always 4k/hdr/dolby atmos, and gaming is still one generation away from a 4k standard, though many exclusives for the PS4 pro push 1800p+ native, whil the Xbox equivalent actually is 4k native.

8K comes in 2020
HMDI 2.1 and DP 1.5 support it
