It's double edged actually...or "it depends", you could say. For one, it's clear by now that the usenet is more or less dead or at least in the later phase of its process of dying. In Germany for example, the jews/feds/police/ruling assholes raided most of the open forums/boards. The free usenet, i.e. the usenet where payment is necessary only for the actual provider of access to the usenet servers, was killed that day. And this is where the money problem comes in: Of course you could pay in addition for the indexer, a non free board and so on, but, you know, part of the game is actually getting things for free.

I agree that Usenet is slowly dying. But I think the NNTP server/client model will survive (in some form.) It's has a lot of security features that are useful on the modern web. Message boards are kill, and piracy is kill, but someone will figure out another use.

Usenet died when fucking NZB became a thing and servers started archiving years and years of posts for braindead dumbass nupirate kids instead of having people continually actually posting things, creating a sense of community and interactivity and discovery.

Usenet was kill by phpBB, binaries where never a problem, those where just kept for way shorter period of time on server.
Kinda interesting how boards/forums also died and people moved mostly to youtube of all places.
