I knew a Japanese guy who could do a really good impersonation of Michael Jackson when doing Karaoke, including dance moves. It was impressive.

I did, but I wasn't able to read the lyrics fast enough to sing along and didn't know them very well so it was a very short try.
Which one is the real one? It's kind of the same thing but I highly doubt you'd say offshore when sailing on the sea, while open sea is a good term to use then I suppose.

I try to sing japanese songs but its pretty hard
You can use it for the both meaning I think.
Either way we use it for a point where it's hard to swim back to the shore.
