real answer is that ethnic identity was and still is incredibly important. germans were snubbed in anglo society early on, so they formed their own enclaves in the midwest. the italians were lynched. the irish were beaten down. african americans had to protect their own identity to survive. etc.

if you look a bit into US history, it becomes clear that Americans cling to their heritage often because they are discriminated for it (germans, italians, irish, africans, jews, chinese, etc.) and have to embrace it to stick together and ride out the storm

first, it's "systemic". second, american prejudice is often divided between de jure and de facto prejudice. case in point being de jure Jim Crow segregation in the south against blacks, while the north had de facto segregation against blacks through things such as real estate red lining. not all oppression has to be "systemic", because often times it occurs outside the law.

Even in India people from the North Eastern part of India (they are indistinguishable from East Asians racially) are very Westernised because they usually believe in Asian folk religion or Christianity. In their dress sense as well as their music and art tastes they're very Westernised.

compare it to people from mainland India who are ardent Hindus or Muslims. In Hinduism marrying outside your race is looked down upon, in Islam marrying a non-Muslim is looked down upon.

Religion is what stops Arabs, Indians, Pakistanis from assimilation. For Africans I'm not so sure, they seem very Westernised especially American blacks. The ones who do get out of that become 100% modernized and once they start consuming media they gravitate towards the Asian side of things rather than Indian. Also it's a very isolated part of the country so I guess the only contact they have with mainland Indians is the Indians that are mostly there as government officers and army.
