When I was a child my great grandfather used to tell me that Americans were all crazy because they took all the crazy people from every country and put them in the same place. Is this the result?

Yes, but that's not the point here.
It was originally just a thing that Jewish families did but it's expanded in recent years to families of all religions that aren't Christian, poor Christian families, or Christian families that either can't or don't care enough to have their extended family over. It's basically the go-to in America now if you don't do a big Christmas dinner at home.
